Forgotten Tracks

Where the grass may grow and lights may dim but the memories never fade.

Stateline Speedway History

Stateline Speedway is a dirt oval track in Coffeyville, Kansas. Owned and operated by Bud and Wanda Purkey. This track was built over a very extended period of time. Stretched out over 10 years  this was used first just as a place for the grandkids to play. The track hosted it's first real races in 1991 and continued to race up until 2003. Now it is the home of Purkey's Auto Salvage. The salvage has a lot of old race cars, even has the speedway's push truck and water truck on it. To go to this track it looks just like a ghost town with race cars, cars, trucks and haulers parked as if they're in the parking lot and pits. The track, stands, guardrails, lights...everything are still standing. The tractor is even still setting in the middle of the infield with the grater not too far away. As you walk up to the track you of course come to the pit area first, you walk up on the pit pass both, then on to the concession stand which still has the Coke machine in it. Then you'll come up to pristine condition stands for the pit crews and family. Off to the left of that is the main grandstands, press box and flagman stand. As you walk along the track you can still read the billboards along the backstretch. All the lights, including the ones on the track are still standing and I'm assuming would still work if the power supply was turned on.

I would like to say a big thank you to the Purkey family for allowing us to look at your little piece of history. I would also like to thank Earl Kerns and K&S Motorsports for the photos.

Also out of respect for the Perkey family (please refrain from asking to see the track at this time, since Bud isn't in very good health) please take a look at our photos as a way to see it.
